How to Drape a Saree: Step-by-Step Guide for Every Occasion

How to Drape a Saree: Step-by-Step Guide for Every Occasion

The saree is one of the most versatile garments in the world — but for many, draping one can feel like an art form. Whether you're a first-timer or looking to master a new style, this guide walks you through the most popular draping techniques so you can wear your saree with confidence.

What You'll Need Before You Start

Before draping, make sure you have:

  • A well-fitted petticoat (underskirt) in a matching colour
  • A blouse that fits snugly
  • Safety pins (at least 4–6)
  • A mirror to check your pleats and pallu

1. The Nivi Style (Most Popular)

Originating from Andhra Pradesh, the Nivi drape is the most widely worn style across India. Here's how to do it:

  1. Tuck the plain end of the saree into the petticoat at the navel, going from right to left all the way around.
  2. Make 5–7 pleats (each about 5 inches wide) and tuck them into the petticoat, slightly to the left of the navel, facing left.
  3. Bring the remaining fabric (the pallu) across your body from right to left, draping it over your left shoulder.
  4. Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder for a secure hold.

This style works beautifully with our Flowy Tales Saree Collection and our lightweight Cotton Sarees.

2. The Bengali Style

The Bengali drape is elegant and distinctive, often worn during festivals and pujas. The pallu is brought from the back over the right shoulder and pinned at the front, creating a graceful fan-like effect.

Our Silk Sarees are perfect for this style — the natural sheen adds to the ceremonial look.

3. The Gujarati Style

In the Gujarati drape, the pallu is brought from the back over the right shoulder and spread across the front. It's a festive, celebratory style that keeps the embroidery or print of the pallu front and centre.

Try this with our Organza Sarees for a light, airy look at weddings and celebrations.

4. The Ready-to-Wear Saree (For Beginners)

If you're new to sarees or short on time, a pre-stitched or ready-to-wear saree gives you the same beautiful look without the draping effort. Simply step in, zip up, and you're ready.

Pro Tips for a Perfect Drape

  • Even pleats matter: Use a pleat-maker or fold carefully against a flat surface for uniform pleats.
  • Pin strategically: Pin at the waist, shoulder, and pallu edge to keep everything in place all day.
  • Fabric matters: Lighter fabrics like cotton and organza are easier to drape; silk and heavier fabrics may need more pins.
  • Practice makes perfect: Try draping at home a day before your event so you're comfortable on the day.
